Chemistry sparks @Waikato 3

Rangatahi at Te wharekura o Mauao had great fun within the PTC workshop @Waikato University labs under the guidance of Teaching Fellow, Dr Martina Pietsch Brown and her postgraduate team.

Students donned white lab coats and safety goggles before working enthusiastically in pairs to perform steam distillation.

Mauao students left Waikato University more aware of the impact of and importance of:

plastic on the environment;

how CO2 emissions affect the pH balance of the ocean resulting in the gradual disintegration of shells in the sea and the risks to molluscs,

chemical extraction processes of products for our manufacturing industry

Bringing science to life for Mauao students at The University of Waikato would go a long way in fostering curiosity and planting the seeds of inspiration for future possible careers in science and technology.

Partnership through Collaboration is pleased to be doing our part in creating awareness in schools about the causes and consequences of high concentrations of CO2. At the same time, we are especially grateful for the opportunity to inspire and create excitement in young students about science and technology and how it affects their lives and can be used to help our environment.
