Chemistry sparks @ Waikato 2

Rangatahi from Papamoa college enjoyed an awesome day in the Chemistry lab at Waikato University. Understanding chemistry provides a good foundation for apprehending the physical world in which we live.

Chemistry touches every aspect of our life and widening that appreciation of chemical technologies and methods was the focus of the PTC workshop with Dr Martina and her team.

Environmental chemistry takes the field to another level as our students learnt about acid rain, ocean acidification, fertilisers and its effect on the soil. Numerous career paths are possible once we begin to expose rangatahi to the field and diverse research opportunities are possible. A few areas of consideration include:

  • impact of factories’ carbon emissions on climate, soil and air quality

  • effect of household cleaners, shampoos, beauty products when they are flushed down the drain?

  • is our groundwater contaminated with pollutants?

  • looking at companies and what type of sustainability and environmental regulations should apply?

Rangatahi had great fun today, but it also left them thinking about ocean acidification, increasing levels of carbon dioxide concentrations and the rising acidity in the sea. Awesome learning!
