Drones Flight-Manawatu

PTC Trust organised for a new group of Palmerston North rangatahi to experience coding and drone mapping. In collaboration with Noel Leeming consultant, youth had the opportunity to apply principles of coding and mathematical concepts to ecological and environmental issues. Learning to code is an essential skill of future endeavours. Typing it to shapes, angles and geometrical reasoning seemed to make maths “come alive for the young ones”.

The plan was to fly the drones above their school and form a map of the school grounds. From this, they wanted to work out their building 'footprint' on the land and the location of current plantings. Finally, they hoped to identify a space for their new environmental project…”a school garden”.

The students had loads of fun learning coding, flying and more importantly thinking prudently about where they could possibly position their strategic initiative.
