Coding and Drones -workshop 2 Hawkesbay

The wind held back just enough for the second group of rangatahi in Hastings to participate in their Drones and coding workshop. Group explored their school grounds learning to navigate their drones through various spaces.

Learning navigational skills has been identified as a critical link for students pursuing STEM-related careers. Nazareth et al (2019) in journal Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications discussed this within their article  Beyond small-scale spatial skills: Navigation skills and geoscience education. Some key highlights included:

“Spatial skills appear to be at the core of several scientific disciplines. However, there may be differences in the amount and type of spatial demands in the STEM fields”.

“People with strong spatial skills are more likely to pursue and succeed in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers”.(Nazareth et al, 2019).

PTC’s hands-on, interactive drones workshops are not only fostering navigational skill improvement but equally increasing environmental awareness and stewardship amongst rangatahi. Working together for a clean, green New Zealand by recycling, re-using and reducing plastic usage across our schools was the main take away from the workshop today.
